Om SathGuru Sri Seshadri Swamigal Thiruvadikkae

Sesha Mahaan loved service and held up Paropakara (selfless service) to others.

There might have been saints who would have been content to achieve realization for themselves and those who neither moved with society nor their little finger, for the benefit of others. Mahan Sri Seshadri Swamigal, Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi, Hazrat Tajuddin Baba, Shri Swami Samarth, Sri Gajanan Maharaj etc; were certainly not one of those self-centered ones. They loved service and held, Paropakara, or service to others, as a noble ideal, to live up to.

On one festive day, during the Brahmotsavam for Lord Arunachaleswara of Thiruvannamalai (10 days celebration – Karthikai-Deepam) with thousands of people drawing the Chariot (Rath) for Sri Ambal (Sri Unnamulai Amman), it got stuck in a depression at a point with inadequate space for movement. Lot of efforts at pulling it out, did not succeed. The chariot car (Rath) had got firmly anchored in the depression. In spite of strenuous efforts, for about two three hours it could not be moved.

Swami appeared all of a sudden from nowhere. Swami applied His hand at two or three spots of the stuck wheel and with His own hand pulled the hemp rope. Seeing that Swami Himself was giving a helping hand, the other people joined in the effort. Immediately the temple car (Rath) started moving freely! People expressed their appreciation saying that the Devi Herself had pulled the car (Rath).

Brahmasri N.Subramania Iyer was a pathfinder of mantra Sastras. He was a famous votary of Sri Vidya. He had authored valuable religious books like Sri Nagara Vimarsam, Gurthathwa Vimarsam etc. Our Swami was his Parama Guru. He was happy to worship Swami, who, knowing his intentions, instructed him to see him early morning at Kambathu Ilayanar Shrine (Karthik Swamy) situated on the eastern side of Sri Arunachaleshwar temple. At Brahma-Muhurtham he met Swami.

At that time a miracle happened. Swami for a moment appeared to him with the grace, beauty and rubicund complexion of none other than Sri Parvati Devi. On seeing Swami, he was overwhelmed with devotion and forgot himself. Subsequently he was given an upadesa and went back. From the above, it is clear that for the welfare of humanity, Sri Parvati Devi Herself manifested as Swami.

Shri Venkatachalam and his wife Subbhalakshmi Ammal were earnest devotees of Swami. Quite often Swami used to visit them, take food in their house and talk to them in a jolly fashion. In the backyard of their house there were two poovarasu (Potia) trees and two drumstick trees. It was a new moon day. Swami dropped in at 4 p.m. and said, “Subbhalakshmi, come here, I will show you some fun.” When she asked what He was going to show, Swami looked into the sky through the open verandah and raised His hands calling out, “Come! Come!” Immediately one crow came, then another crow flew in, then five, ten, hundred crows flew in, likewise a number of other species of birds like pigeons, parrots, various types of sparrows, all flew in.

They all crowded the whole place including the neighbouring house, sitting on the ground, on the roof, on the trees etc; and started making noise and jumping here and there and playing. Swami was in the midst of the birds and played with them. Subbhalakshmj was watching the fun with curiosity. Then Swami took a strand from his shoulder cloth and blew it. Immediately all the birds departed.

One turns away from the Guru who is near at hand and seeks to meditate on the Divine which is difficult of attainment, may be linked to one who throws away the treasure he already has and goes in search of a hidden treasure.”

Om SathGuru Sri Seshadri Swamigal Thiruvadikkae

“There! Vittobha goes in Royal Style!”

Sookshma Drishti is the ability to perceive subtle objects. The atom is a minute thing. Even more minute is the Jeevaswarupa (Soul). The soul is very minute and there is nothing more minute than it. While the soul is not perceptible for a person with ordinary senses, it becomes manifest to a Brahmajnani. Great sages like Vasisht also possessed this power. The following is an example of Swami’s perceptive power that was innate to Him.

One day Swami was running in the streets of Thiruvannamalai pointing to the sky saying, “There! Vittobha goes in Royal Style! Ah! Ah!” (Sri Vittobha Swami- Maha Samadhi-Polur-34 kms from Thiruvannamalai)

On the day when Swami made the above observation, Sri Vittobha had attained Maha Samadhi. Swami made those remarks at 6 a.m. And at 11 a.m. a telegram was received in Thiruvannamalai that was an intimation of the news. Mahaan had perceived this by virtue of His Sookshma Drishti.

(Sri Vittobha Swami was a jeevan Mukta.)

Sub-Registrar Sundaresa Chettiar had two unmarried daughters named Parvathibhai and Janakibhai. They were great devotees of Swami. The two girls sought refuge at the feet of Swami for the whole day. One day Janaki had a dream. Janaki and Parvathi were bathing in the Sivaganga; Parvathi got drowned, seeing that, Janaki cried aloud. At that moment Swami rushed and lent his hand to lift her out of the water. When they were returning home, a chameleon kept chasing Janaki. Swami again appeared on the scene and drove away the chameleon. Janakibhai divulged the above dream in the morning to all members of the household.

When later that day they called on Swami, He told Janakibhai, “Sivaganga is very deep. Should you not have cautioned Parvathibhai not to get into that place? Yama, who came to take her life, chased you in the form of chameleon.”

You need not have any fear hereafter.” Saying that He soothed them with His hands. It is clear from the above incident that Swami saves his devotees, with immeasurable Mercy.

Mahaan Sri Seshadri Swamigal

Self-Illumination (Self-Realization) – Attained by a devotee of

Sri Seshadri Swamigal of Thiruvannamalai by His magical touch

“The camphor has lit up, what could I do?”

Murugesa Mudaliar of Chittoor (A.P.) was the co-brother of Sivaprakasa Mudaliar, the police prosecuting Inspector at Thiruvannamalai. He had retired as a Sub- Registrar. Having heard so much about Swamiji, he developed a yearning to see him. On one occasion he had to come to Thiruvannamalai with his entire family to attend to some obsequies. At that time he met Swamiji and prostrated before him. One day he prayed to Swamiji to impart spiritual knowledge. Seeing his pure heart and strength of determination, Swamiji one day took him to the sanctum of Lord Muruga (Lord Kartik) at the Kambathu Illayanar Shrine, made him sit down and lightly pressed his head with right hand. Right away, Self-Illumination dawned on Murugesa Mudaliar, who became ecstatic and jumped with joy.

He ran out shouting loudly, “Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Seshadri Seshadri!” He danced, sang and jumped up, and down. He did not even notice that his dhoti had slipped off. He was totally bereft of so-called decency and his body senses. People started gathering wondering whether it was a disease or what. Siva Prakasa Mudaliar and other relatives were un-nerved and asked Swamiji what had happened.

Swamiji replied, “He is Pattinathu Pillai (a saint of that name in his previous birth) and was ready for spiritual instruction and sought it and I imparted the same.”

The camphor has lit up, what could I do?”

Siva Prakasa Mudaliar and other relatives ran after him. For two or three days he was in ecstasy and ran to Ramanashram and other places shouting Rama Nama and doing things in a peculiar manner and did not pay any heed to the relatives plea to come back. Therefore Siva Prakasa Mudaliar requested Swamiji to bring him back home. By chance Swamiji saw him near the Sadhu Chatram and in gentle voice told him, “You can go home.” Immediately after that Murugesa Mudaliar returned to his co-brother’s house.

Siva Prakasa Mudaliar saw Swamiji that midnight at the temple of Lord Muruga (Lord Karthik) (Kambathu Ilayanar Srine situated inside Sri Arunachaleshwar Temple). Swamiji told him that Murugesa Mudaliar could not bear the illumination. It worked on his brain. Since that was very powerful, it will take few days to become normal. Accordingly, he became perfectly peaceful and returned to his normal self after few days. Later he was living at Chittoor as a spiritually enlightened person.

Avathar Sri Seshadri Swamigal of Thiruvannamalai

How to meditate? – Awakening of the Spiritual Vision by Swamigal

E.S. Ramaswamy Sastriar was a Sub-Magistrate in Thiruvannamalai. He had great devotion to Swamiji. As per his usual routine, one day he started his meditation at 4 a.m. But he was finding it very difficult to control his mind. His mind was swinging from one end to another and he could not focus on spirituality.

Our Swamiji came to know this by His Power of Gnana Drishti, He came to Magistrate’s house and knocked at his door. Sastriar opened the door and was overjoyed. To a query from Swamiji as to what he was doing, he prostrated and told Swamiji that he was trying to mediate but it was not successful.

On hearing this, Swamiji asked him to open his mouth and put two of His fingers beneath the tongue and pressed them down. That very instant, Sastriar forgot himself and was immersed in the joy of Self-illumination and swooned! He recovered after half an hour. Swamiji then advised him and departed from there.

After the incident, Sastriar’s nature underwent a radical change. He became a man of peace. He used to recite the following slokas recalling the opening of this Spiritual Vision by Swamiji:

I bow to Lord Sesha, and offer Him my Salutations – The Supreme Mahaan, who Blessed me with the experience of the Para-Brahmman (The Divine Consciousness), in my physical frame, by His Gracious touch with His two fingertips in my mouth!

I am blessed! I have reaped the fruits of my good deeds! – As I have been been Graced by my Supreme Guru, who is the embodiment of Benevolence and Compassion, to whom I bow, and offer my Salutations!

I bow to Lord Seshadri, who has opened my eyes to True Knowledge, [with (the collyrium (eye-salve) of Knowledge], that had been blinded by the darkness of ignorance!

To Him I offer my Salutations!

One who cultivates the heart’s natural love obtains the guidance of a Guru, and starts his Sadana (Path of spiritual discipline). He becomes a pravartaka, an initiate.

Man, when endowed with the heavenly gift of pure love, naturally becomes disposed to avoid the company of what is Asath and to keep the company of what has been described as Sath.”

    – The Revelation- Sutra6. The Holy Science,

    – Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri (1855-1936 – Disciple of Sri Lahari Mahasaya and Guruji of Sri Yogananda Paramahansa)

Mahaan Sri Seshadri Swamigal of Thiruvannamalai

“Saying that there was nothing to fear, He left.”

Venu Ammal’s daughter, Balammal, was on her deathbed, struck with tuberculosis. One day Swamiji chanced to pass by her house when Kuzhumani Narayana Sastrigal1, rushed to Mahaan and invited him to her house.

She brought a plate containing sacred ash and pleaded with Him to cure her daughter. Swamiji applied part of the sacred ash on His forehead and part on her forehead. He also partook of upma brought by Kuzhumani Sastrigal and also fed her some of it. Saying that there was nothing to fear, he left. Swami had cured Balammal’s Tuberculosis!

Wonder of wonders, the very next day Balammal recovered gradually. In the course of the next 10 days she staged a full recovery and looked like a beautiful doll. She lived for eight years thereafter and left behind a progeny of three children. This was another case of miracle wherein Swamiji had rescued a person from the jaws of death.

1 the writer of Swamiji’s biography in Tamil in 1939 – he lived with Swamiji from 1920 to 1929 till Swamiji attained Maha Samadhi at Thiruvannamalai

Mahan Sri Seshadri Swamigal of Thiruvannamalai

Please show me some miracle…”

One day, Suryanarayana Iyer saw Swamiji standing near a neem tree close to the Sri Arunachaleshwar (Shiva) temple and prostrated before him. Getting up he told Swamiji, “People say you are a big Mahan (Avathar). I want to understand your powers. Please show me some miracle.” He pleaded with Swamiji a number times in the above manner. Swamiji went here and there for some time, and then he picked up some dried leaves lying on the ground and asked him to eat them.

What a miracle! When he ate them, he found it tasted like sugar cane!

He wondered whether it was sugar or candy!
